USC EDnovate teaching fellows program

EDNOVATE AND USC ROSSIER TO PARTNER IN TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAM

New Partnership Will Address the Teacher Shortage by Supporting New Teachers of Color

Los Angeles, CA, March 2023 -  Ednovate, a network of innovative public charter schools, has partnered again with the University of Southern California (USC) Rossier School of Education to establish a groundbreaking teacher training residency program. This program, which will be called the USC Ednovate Teaching Fellows program,  is supported in part by a $250,000 grant from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Due to “the great resignation” and “the great reshuffle” trends that surfaced in the post-COVID world, highly qualified teachers are in great demand. The new program, located in Los Angeles, aims to provide high-quality professional development for teachers across California. The partnership is expected to create a robust pipeline of effective educators equipped to meet the needs of diverse student populations. In addition, it will support the replication of innovative teaching and program practices within Ednovate.

“We are thrilled to partner with USC Rossier again, this time to create a center that will prepare teachers to serve California students, particularly those from under-resourced communities,” said Oliver Sicat, CEO of Ednovate. “Our teachers play a critical role in helping students achieve their full potential, and we believe that this partnership will help us develop and retain the very best educators.”

The teaching fellows program will allow candidates to complete a year of teaching in high-performing Ednovate classrooms alongside mentor teachers while earning their Masters at USC and working toward their credentials. A cohort-based program, the inaugural year will kick off with 10+ residents across Ednovate charter schools.

Dean of USC Rossier, Dr. Pedro Noguera, stated, “Rossier is excited to work with Ednovate to prepare a new crop of teachers to meet the educational challenges of our times. Ednovate’s commitment to high standards and innovative practice combined with Rossier’s commitment to excellence in teaching will allow us to build a partnership to prepare teachers who are able to help all students excel academically and in life.”

“As teacher educators, our goal is to provide our students with opportunities to develop and focus on their craft and learn from experts in the field. The financial, academic, and emotional support that a residency experience provides maximizes the learning experience for teacher candidates. Most important is the impact that our candidates will have on the lives of children in classrooms as a result of their residency experience, ” shared Dr. Eugenia Mora-Flores of USC Rossier.

The fellowship is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2023.  Ednovate and USC Rossier are working together to develop the curriculum and programming. The partnership represents an important step forward for teacher development in California and highlights the critical role that collaboration and innovation play in improving education outcomes for all students.
